Forthcoming Online Exhibition

Fri 21st June - 20th July 2024 - we got you covered this summer

Our Dear Patrons,

It is with immense pleasure that Gallery Kolkata as a team presents to you a dual exhibition.

We have curated two simultaneous shows that celebrate the rich tapestry of Indian art, from the traditional to Modern Masters.

The first show, “Miniature Marvels -Compact Chronicles of Jamini Roy,”is a tribute to one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. Known for his unique artistic language that seamlessly blended the traditional with the modern, Jamini Roy’s small format paintings and drawings are a testament to his mastery and innovation. His works, characterized by bold, vibrant colors and simplistic forms, capture the essence of rural life and Indian folklore. This exhibition offers an intimate look at Roy’s artistic journey, showcasing how he moved away from Western academic traditions to embrace a style that was inherently Indian in its expression.

The second show,“Sangraha: A Confluence of Modern Masters”brings together a diverse array of works from some of the greatest masters of our times. From the evocative paper works of Paritosh Sen and Ram Kumar to the vibrant canvases of Thota Vaikuntam and KM Adimoolam, this exhibition is a testament to the breadth and depth of Indian art in a diversity of technique and expression,

It also features a selection of works from the much talented however under-recognized masters, including the watercolors of Shyamal Dutta Ray, the pastels of Reba Hore, and the ink drawings of Somnath Hore, among others. Each artist, with their unique style and perspective, contributes to the rich narrative of Indian art.

Sangraha,is a testament to the evolution of Indian art, showcasing how art has grown and transformed over the years while remaining deeply rooted in its cultural heritage. From the evocative landscapes of Bengal’s Prakash Karmakar to the abstract forms of Chennai-based K.M Adimoolam; each piece in this exhibition tells a unique story. They invite you to explore diverse themes and narratives, offering a glimpse into the minds of some of the greatest artists of our times.

As we embark on this artistic journey, we hope that these exhibitions will offer you a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indian art. We believe that art has the power to transcend boundaries, to communicate ideas, and to evoke emotions. And it is our sincere hope that the works on display will resonate with you, leaving a lasting impression long after you’ve left the gallery.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. We look forward to sharing the beauty and diversity of Indian art with you.

Exhibition catalog on view -Saturday 20th April. Works on view at the Gallery- 22nd April onwards

India has a rich and diverse artistic heritage that spans centuries and cultures. From the ancient cave paintings of Ajanta and Ellora to the contemporary installations of Subodh Gupta and Bharti Kher, Indian art reflects the changing times and contexts of its creators and viewers. Among the most influential and celebrated artists in Indian art history are the modern masters, who emerged in the post-independence era and shaped the course of Indian art in the 20th century and beyond.

The modern masters were a group of artists who experimented with various styles, techniques, and themes, drawing inspiration from both the traditional and the global sources. They sought to express their individual and collective identities, as well as their responses to the social and political realities of their times. They challenged the conventions and norms of the colonial and academic art, and created a distinctive and diverse Indian form of modernism.

This online exhibition showcases the works of 23 Indian modern masters, who represent different generations, regions, and schools of thought.

The Bengal School of Art commonly referred as Bengal School, was an art movement and a style of Indian painting that originated in Bengal, primarily Kolkata and Shantiniketan, and flourished throughout the Indian subcontinent, during the British Raj in the early 20th century.

This group provided a modernist alternative to the revivalist nationalism established by the Bengal school of art and to encourage an Indian avant-garde , engaged at an international level. They emphasized a new conceptual freedom in the use of color, allowing it to express their individual emotions

From the 1990s onward, Indian artists began to increase the number of forms they used in their work. After the economic liberalization of the country that occurred during that decade, Indian art began to introduce new concepts and to work both within and outside of previous academic traditions.
