A painter, illustrator, tutor and writer, Sen’s more recognizable works are his caricatures, which reflect strong underlying socio-political shades, and his female nude drawings. His style of representation is influenced by his exposure to Western modern art, and has traces of cubism. He uses two dimensional, structured planes but still creates an illusion of voluptuousness. Raja Ravi Varma was an Indian painter and artist. He is considered among the greatest painters in the history of Indian art. His works are one of the best examples of the fusion of European academic art with a purely Indian sensibility and iconography. Additionally, he was notable for making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public, which greatly enhanced his reach and influence as a painter and public figure. His lithographs increased the involvement of common people with fine arts and defined artistic tastes among common people. Furthermore, his religious depictions of Hindu deities and works from Indian epic poetry and Puranas have received profound acclaim. He was part of the royal family of erstwhile Parappanad, Malappuram district.

ABOUT EMBELLISHED OLEOGRAPHS

It was in the 19th century that artist Raja Ravi Varma, to make art accessible to everyone – even the middle class, started making oleographs; a print made with oil paint that makes the painting look like an oil painting.

The popular images of goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati that most of us have grown up with were created by Raja Ravi Verma (1848-1906). What he also did was take art beyond the boundaries of palaces in the early 19th century to the drawing rooms and puja rooms of homes through his oleographs.

An oleograph is a print made with oil paint, and is made to look like an oil painting. Verma popularized this technique through his printing press in Mumbai (then Bombay), which he set up in 1892 to produce high-quality prints of his paintings. In the early 20th century, some oleographs made their way to Burma, where they were further embellished with embroidery and zardosi. The pieces with the zari work are the real collectibles. The women of that period often used these works as a reference to find the color combinations in vogue. Each zari piece is unique as they cannot be exactly the same.

The pieces are self-explanatory. The use of fabric is very unique – it resonates with the aesthetic of those times and reflects on the fashion trends of that era.

This collection presents a rare opportunity for connoisseurs and collectors to see a rare collection of these zari work oleographs.

Pichwai

Pichhwai (also pichwai, pichhavai, pichhvai, pechhavai etc), literally meaning ‘that which hangs from the back’ from the Sanskrit words “Pichh” means back and “wais” means hanging, are large devotional Hindu painted pictures, normally on cloth, which portray Krishna. They are mainly made to hang in Hindu temples of the Pushtimarg devotional tradition, especially the Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, built around 1672. They are hung behind the idol of Shrinathji, a local form of Krishna and the centre of Pushtimarg worship, to depict his leelas. Aurangabad was another area associated with them. The purpose of pichhwais, other than artistic appeal, is to narrate tales of Krishna to the illiterate. Temples have sets with different images, which are changed according to the calendar of festivals celebrating the deity

Nathdwara painting covers these and similar works in other genres, especially Indian miniature paintings. Like the Pushtimarg tradition, they originated in the Deccan, but are now mainly associated with Western India.

The technique and art practices he acquired from his father without going through any academic routine. Indra Dugar considered Santiniketan his alma-mater, and drew his inspiration from the art of Nandalal Bose.
Perhaps the absence of academic programming gave Dugar’s art a rare individuality that distinguished him from other artists of Kala Bhavana. Dugar soon outgrew the Bengal School mannerisms, invariably visiting places to paint ‘on the spot’ observed views of nature and life. While progressively reducing the naturalistic details in his paintings, Indra Dugar instinctively retained colour harmony for expressing serenity in nature.

It exposed him to the works of French modernist artists.

Shuvaprasanna Golden Flute 12 x 12 inches | Acrylic Oil & Charcoal on Canvas | 169000/- delivered Framed
Shuvaprasanna Illusion | Acrylic Oil & Charcoal on Canvas | 12 x 12 inches | 169000/- delivered Framed

Shuvaprasanna’s Golden Flute considered as Krishna. It is not difficult to see what the sources of his image are, but those are primarily in the area of iconography. The Lord is rendered naturally in blue, dark as a cloud, like he is in countless paintings from the past, whether Rajasthani or Pahari. The tilak mark that adorns his forehead is, again, naturally vertical urdhvapundra for that is what Vaishnavas wear. What he carries in his hands is no weapon or other ayudha, but a bansuri flute; around his loins is the brilliant yellow garment, the pita vastra, that glistens against his dark skin; surrounding him, or at play around, are either peacocks with the feathers of whose tails he decorates his crown the Lords legs, in part to turn his neck upwards to listen to the flute and in part to offer himself as his vahana vehicle. There is an unearthly air about all this, these constructs and abstractions. The remarkable thing, however, is that for the viewer there is no loss of feeling, perhaps even of reverence. It is a different kind of lila that he is being invited to witness.

ILLUISION Its gloom, daily struggles and cultural ethos continued to be depicted evocatively in graphic prints and other work of the 1970s and 1980s that includes Illusion, Abode and Lament. Expressions of dismay overlaid with a touch of hope in the culture and squalour of Calcutta, the citys survival instinct despite its decay, is featured through a fusion of symbols and images.

00-GK-GCS-OC001-1412 Gurucharan Singh Oil on Canvas

Born in 1949 in Patiala, India, Gurcharan Singh is an acclaimed Indian painter, known for his figurative paintings. He studied at Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chandigarh. His signature paintings are based on people from a financially compromising class, specifically focusing on underprivileged and exploited women. The Red Light in Black and White and Les Miserables are two of his notable works. His works have been displayed at various solo shows and group exhibitions in India and abroad.

The Red Light in Black and White is one of his earliest paintings. These works consist of a plethora of colours, ranging from red to green to shocking pinks, present in abundance. Yet Singh saw nothing but a deep, dark abyss down which men and women were sliding, with reckless abandon. A journey into a colorful hell; one from which he emerged to paint furiously, translating his sorrow and despair into images that haunt the mind.

Samir Sarkar

For the past 25 years, Samir Sarkar has been professionally painting. His  figures have a definite inspiration from Egyptian paintings, thus the figures are drawn in the same form, the clothes that they wear have long lines making them look taller and in a way Egyptian. His paintings, in a way are people he lives with. They give him inspiration to produce more, to experiment more and thus to create his own world with them. It’s his world that I want people in this world to see.

Here his small line drawings make a wonderful gift or collectible.

Manas Biswas is an ace watercolorist who completed his art education from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. Biswas would like to label himself an abstract painter who uses everyday objects as inspiration, yet removes them from their informed reality. Biswas frequently uses classic studies from nature, but rather than rendering them to truthful perfection, he uses his brush and colours to create an abstract piece which to the viewer is a sight that is seen and yet not observed.
