Description

Ashoke Mullick | Standing before Temple | Acrylic on Canvas | 18 x 18 inches

This evocative painting by Ashoke Mullick transforms a quiet rural scene into a deeply atmospheric and almost meditative visual experience. At the center of the composition stands a solitary black goat, calmly positioned before a cluster of small temple-like structures nestled within a vibrant natural landscape. Though simple in subject, the artwork carries a mysterious emotional depth that invites contemplation.

The bold contrast between the dark silhouette of the animal and the luminous surroundings immediately captures attention. Mullick uses rich shades of green, crimson red, earthy brown, and vivid blue to create a landscape that feels both familiar and dreamlike. The winding white pathway draws the eye gently into the composition, leading toward the temples and enhancing the sense of stillness and quiet reflection.

The painting’s simplified forms and expressive brushwork give it a folk-inspired charm while maintaining a distinctly contemporary visual language. The bare trees against the glowing red sky add a subtle dramatic tension, balancing serenity with intrigue. There is a strong sense of solitude in the scene, yet it feels peaceful rather than lonely — as though the landscape itself is holding a silent story.

Executed in acrylic on canvas, this artwork beautifully celebrates rural imagery, symbolism, and emotional simplicity. Its bold color palette and contemplative mood make it an excellent addition to modern interiors, curated art collections, or spaces that appreciate poetic visual storytelling.

I like to depict the modern times when people have lost all human contact and have become mechanised. They read newspapers, pick up some jargon and communicate most of the time by telephone. As a painter, I throw light on these aspects where traditions are breaking down and the relationship between generations is getting lost.

Ashoke Mullick is considered one of the leading painters from the Bengal School of Art. Mullick combines a sense of satire with contemporary conditions. His paintings focus strongly on the ordinary man and the contradictions he faces.

Sometimes the look is satiric at other times, it is compassionate, says Mullick of his own works. He uses colours like greens and blues to depict a largely urban India.

Mullick was educated at the Fine Arts Government College, Kolkata. He was greatly fascinated and influenced by works of painters like Gaganendranath Tagore. I was also influenced by German Expressionism that linked art to life. The effects I create are intentional and I want them to become a part of visual experience, he says.

He mostly works in oil on canvas, because as he says, That’s the medium which let’s me experiment the most and which helps me to depict modern life, which in some ways is surrealistic.
