Description

Ashoke Mullick | Musician | Acrylic on Canvas | 48 x 36 inches | 2024

This striking contemporary portrait by Ashoke Mullick captures the quiet intensity and emotional solitude of a musician lost in thought. Painted in bold acrylic tones, the artwork presents a seated figure dressed in a vivid orange-red jacket, resting casually beside a saxophone that curves elegantly through the composition like an extension of his inner voice.

The musician’s expression feels reflective and deeply personal, as though caught in a silent pause between melodies. His relaxed posture contrasts beautifully with the energetic palette of fiery oranges, deep blacks, and cool blue tones in the background, creating a powerful visual balance between warmth and introspection. The oversized chair and simplified surroundings direct all attention toward the figure’s emotional presence and individuality.

The saxophone itself becomes more than an instrument — it symbolizes memory, rhythm, creativity, and the emotional burden often carried by artists. Mullick’s expressive brushwork and layered textures give the painting a raw authenticity, allowing the viewer to feel both the stillness and hidden movement within the scene.

Minimal yet emotionally charged, this artwork reflects themes of identity, loneliness, artistic passion, and quiet resilience. Its bold colors and modern folk-inspired style make it an engaging statement piece for contemporary interiors and art collections alike.

I like to depict the modern times when people have lost all human contact and have become mechanised. They read newspapers, pick up some jargon and communicate most of the time by telephone. As a painter, I throw light on these aspects where traditions are breaking down and the relationship between generations is getting lost.

Ashoke Mullick is considered one of the leading painters from the Bengal School of Art. Mullick combines a sense of satire with contemporary conditions. His paintings focus strongly on the ordinary man and the contradictions he faces.

Sometimes the look is satiric at other times, it is compassionate, says Mullick of his own works. He uses colours like greens and blues to depict a largely urban India.

Mullick was educated at the Fine Arts Government College, Kolkata. He was greatly fascinated and influenced by works of painters like Gaganendranath Tagore. I was also influenced by German Expressionism that linked art to life. The effects I create are intentional and I want them to become a part of visual experience, he says.

He mostly works in oil on canvas, because as he says, That’s the medium which let’s me experiment the most and which helps me to depict modern life, which in some ways is surrealistic.
