Description

Ashoke Mullick | Jumping | Acrylic on Canvas | 18 x 18 inches

This dynamic artwork by Ashoke Mullick captures a breathtaking moment of movement and freedom through a surreal and poetic visual language. Suspended above a winding river and quiet landscape, a golden spotted cheetah appears to leap effortlessly through the sky, transforming the ordinary scene into something dreamlike and symbolic.

The composition is both simple and powerful. The flowing pale-blue river guides the viewer’s eye through the earthy terrain, while the dense vertical trees on one side create balance and rhythm within the painting. Above it all, the floating feline dominates the canvas with grace and energy, almost appearing weightless against the muted sky. The artwork blurs the boundary between reality and imagination, inviting viewers into a world where nature follows emotion rather than logic.

Mullick’s expressive use of color and form gives the painting a meditative quality despite its sense of motion. The warm golden tones of the animal contrast beautifully with the softer greens, browns, and blues of the landscape below. There is a feeling of escape and liberation in the composition — as though the creature is moving beyond earthly limitations and into a space of instinct, spirit, and freedom.

Executed in acrylic on canvas, this artwork reflects Ashoke Mullick’s distinctive ability to merge storytelling with abstraction. Bold yet serene, it makes a striking statement piece for contemporary interiors, art collections, or spaces that celebrate imagination and emotional expression.

I like to depict the modern times when people have lost all human contact and have become mechanised. They read newspapers, pick up some jargon and communicate most of the time by telephone. As a painter, I throw light on these aspects where traditions are breaking down and the relationship between generations is getting lost.

Ashoke Mullick is considered one of the leading painters from the Bengal School of Art. Mullick combines a sense of satire with contemporary conditions. His paintings focus strongly on the ordinary man and the contradictions he faces.

Sometimes the look is satiric at other times, it is compassionate, says Mullick of his own works. He uses colours like greens and blues to depict a largely urban India.

Mullick was educated at the Fine Arts Government College, Kolkata. He was greatly fascinated and influenced by works of painters like Gaganendranath Tagore. I was also influenced by German Expressionism that linked art to life. The effects I create are intentional and I want them to become a part of visual experience, he says.

He mostly works in oil on canvas, because as he says, That’s the medium which let’s me experiment the most and which helps me to depict modern life, which in some ways is surrealistic.
