Description

Ashoke Mullick | Red House | Acrylic on Canvas | 18 x 18 inches | 2025

This captivating artwork by Ashoke Mullick presents a vivid architectural dreamscape filled with mystery, symbolism, and emotional warmth. Dominating the composition is a striking red building with an arched entrance and a winding staircase that seems to invite the viewer into an unknown world beyond. The glowing red structure stands boldly against the cool blue sky, creating a dramatic and visually compelling contrast.

A solitary bird rests above the building, adding a quiet sense of movement and freedom to the scene. Beside the structure, a tall tree rises gracefully, softening the geometry of the architecture with organic life and balance. The staircase leading into the darkened doorway becomes a symbolic pathway — perhaps suggesting transition, memory, curiosity, or spiritual passage.

Mullick’s distinctive style blends simplified forms with expressive color fields, allowing the painting to feel both contemporary and deeply personal. The bold use of crimson red gives the artwork an emotional intensity, while the surrounding darker tones create depth and intrigue. Despite its minimal composition, the painting carries a cinematic atmosphere, as though capturing a fleeting moment from a forgotten dream or distant memory.

Executed in acrylic on canvas, this artwork beautifully combines architecture, nature, and imagination. Its strong visual presence and poetic mood make it an exceptional statement piece for modern interiors, galleries, or collectors drawn to narrative-driven contemporary art.

I like to depict the modern times when people have lost all human contact and have become mechanised. They read newspapers, pick up some jargon and communicate most of the time by telephone. As a painter, I throw light on these aspects where traditions are breaking down and the relationship between generations is getting lost.

Ashoke Mullick is considered one of the leading painters from the Bengal School of Art. Mullick combines a sense of satire with contemporary conditions. His paintings focus strongly on the ordinary man and the contradictions he faces.

Sometimes the look is satiric at other times, it is compassionate, says Mullick of his own works. He uses colours like greens and blues to depict a largely urban India.

Mullick was educated at the Fine Arts Government College, Kolkata. He was greatly fascinated and influenced by works of painters like Gaganendranath Tagore. I was also influenced by German Expressionism that linked art to life. The effects I create are intentional and I want them to become a part of visual experience, he says.

He mostly works in oil on canvas, because as he says, That’s the medium which let’s me experiment the most and which helps me to depict modern life, which in some ways is surrealistic.
