Asato Ma Sadgamaya | Glass | W 36 x H 12 x D 12 inches
Asato ma sadgamaya…
Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya…
There is an insatiable urge that goads us to delve into multiple mediums — a natural transition of images from one form to another. It is almost like unveiling mysteries that lie dormant deep within.
There is a quiet power in unlocking memories and emotions when one is surrounded by shapes and colours. A form that is very close to my heart is the kerosene lamp from yesteryears, with its slender, delicate glass chimney and a steady burning flame within. For this work, I have engaged closely with the image of the flame.
My mother would recite and explain a Sanskrit shloka from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad —
Asato ma sadgamaya…
Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya…
Lead me from the unreal to the real.
Lead me from darkness to light.
Lead life towards knowledge, away from ignorance.
Today, when I look back, I realise that all the aspirations of the human heart are contained within these timeless lines.
