Description

Prahlad Karmakar | Untitled | Charcoal on Paper | 17 x 13 inches

This evocative charcoal-on-paper artwork presents a seated langur rendered with remarkable simplicity and emotional depth. Using swift, confident strokes and delicate tonal variations, the artist captures the animal in a reflective pose, highlighting its gentle demeanor and natural elegance.

The monochromatic palette enhances the raw beauty of the drawing, allowing viewers to focus on the form, posture, and quiet presence of the subject. Every line contributes to a sense of movement and life, while the uncluttered background creates a contemplative atmosphere that draws attention to the langur’s expressive features.

Ideal for collectors of wildlife art, figurative sketches, and modern Indian works on paper, this piece celebrates the artist’s keen observation of nature and ability to convey emotion through minimal means. Its understated charm makes it a versatile addition to both contemporary and traditional interiors, bringing a sense of tranquility and connection to the natural world.

Prahlad Chandra Karmakar (1900-1946) was a classically trained studio artist from Calcutta (now Kolkata), best known for his oil paintings that exemplified the rich academic tradition of art in Bengal.

His work sought to introduce different subjects to oil painting, besides portraiture, and the choice of a rural setting in this work is significant for the turn it anticipates among many Bengal modernists who would regularly employ folk idioms in their art from the 1940s onwards. He taught at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and has often been compared to the Dutch masters for his attention to light and detail.
