Description

Sunil Das | Untitled | Jottings Pen & Ink on Graph Paper | 18 x 14 inches

This captivating pen-and-ink artwork on graph paper is a vivid exploration of movement, imagination, and emotional energy. Built through layers of flowing lines, abstract organic forms, and bold black ink gestures, the composition feels alive with rhythm and spontaneity. The artwork draws the viewer into a world where figures, symbols, and textures merge into an expressive visual language that is both mysterious and deeply engaging.

The artist’s use of graph paper introduces a subtle sense of structure beneath the free-flowing forms, creating a beautiful contrast between control and instinct. Delicate markings, dotted patterns, and fluid contours intertwine with dramatic ink washes, giving the piece remarkable depth and motion. The composition appears almost dreamlike — as if thoughts, memories, and emotions are unfolding directly onto the surface.

Rather than offering a fixed interpretation, the artwork encourages personal connection and discovery. Every section reveals new details, making the piece feel layered, intellectual, and emotionally charged. Its abstract nature allows it to continuously evolve in the eyes of the viewer, making it a compelling statement piece for collectors and contemporary art enthusiasts alike.

With its monochromatic elegance and expressive character, this artwork would bring sophistication and artistic energy to modern interiors, gallery spaces, creative studios, or curated collections focused on experimental and contemporary expressionist art.

Sunil Das is undoubtedly a multi-dimensional artist known for his furiously experimental and enterprising style. Born in 1939 in Calcutta, India, he studied at the Govt College of Art & Craft in Calcutta. On a scholarship from the French Government, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The artist has painted across several oeuvres, each one distinctive and to which he brought his singular version. Not confining himself to using brush & pen while painting (even using the palms of his hands or his fingers) his paintings not only express the physical attributes of his subjects but also their associative ones. It was in the course of his travels that he chanced to spend a few months in Spain, where he developed his passion for horses and bulls.

The artist has won many medals and awards, including from the state government and the Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also been a part of juries and art bodies in India, France & Brazil. In 2014, he was conferred with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.

The artist passed away in 2015.
