Constellation Coffee Table | Cast Concrete, Etched Glass Top | H 18 x Base Dia 48 inches | Glass Dia 60 inches | 2026
The Constellations is an exploration of a softness and fuzziness which comes from objects being very remote, being transformed into precision and solid presence when they come into close proximity. The pieces are made from concrete a material made from cement, but a chemical process and a hyper precise mould renders the soft powdery fuzziness of cement into the solid presence that is concrete. Modular and configurable into different compositions, the work speaks of dichotomy of distance and proximity, of how the geometry and position of constellations hundreds of light years from us determine what we are and who we become, the internal transformation from cement to concrete. Within concrete hides the element of fire, just as it does in the heart of the stars that make the constellations.
The Concrete table reveals the geometry of a toroidal form in 2D in the etching of the glass top and then extrapolates the drawing into the 3D base. Concrete is often perceived as an architectural material. This then is a work of architectural sculpture in miniature, just as an architectural plan manifests into built forms.
