This expressive work by Sunil Das presents a striking profile of a human figure, built through spontaneous lines, translucent washes, and layers of colour.

The face appears almost to emerge from the surrounding space, with its features loosely defined rather than sharply outlined. Shades of turquoise and green give the composition a fresh, dreamlike quality, while the darker gestural marks add movement and character.

Description

Sunil Das | Untitled | Watercolour on Paper | 10.5 x 14.5 inches | 2008

This expressive work by Sunil Das presents a striking profile of a human figure, built through spontaneous lines, translucent washes, and layers of colour.

The face appears almost to emerge from the surrounding space, with its features loosely defined rather than sharply outlined. Shades of turquoise and green give the composition a fresh, dreamlike quality, while the darker gestural marks add movement and character.

What makes the work especially engaging is the balance between the recognisable human form and the freedom of the artist’s mark-making. Scribbled lines, abstract gestures, and subtle textures move across the face and background, creating the feeling of thoughts, memories, and emotions unfolding on the paper. The work feels intimate and immediate, reflecting Das’s ability to capture a personality through a few energetic strokes rather than a conventional, detailed portrait.

The handwritten elements and visible signature further enhance its spontaneous, personal character. It is a work that rewards a closer look—the more one observes it, the more the face, lines, and colours seem to reveal themselves.

Sunil Das is undoubtedly a multi-dimensional artist known for his furiously experimental and enterprising style. Born in 1939 in Calcutta, India, he studied at the Govt College of Art & Craft in Calcutta. On a scholarship from the French Government, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The artist has painted across several oeuvres, each one distinctive and to which he brought his singular version. Not confining himself to using brush & pen while painting (even using the palms of his hands or his fingers) his paintings not only express the physical attributes of his subjects but also their associative ones. It was in the course of his travels that he chanced to spend a few months in Spain, where he developed his passion for horses and bulls.

The artist has won many medals and awards, including from the state government and the Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also been a part of juries and art bodies in India, France & Brazil. In 2014, he was conferred with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.

The artist passed away in 2015.
