Description

Sunil Das | Untitled | Ink on Paper | 14 x 11 inches | 1977

This evocative ink-on-paper artwork is a powerful blend of imagination, symbolism, and emotional intensity. Rendered with swift, instinctive lines and dramatic black ink strokes, the composition unfolds like a visual stream of consciousness — where forms emerge, dissolve, and reconnect in unexpected ways. The presence of the bird-like figure above and the deeply expressive human face below creates a mysterious dialogue between instinct, memory, and identity.

The artist’s fluid line work gives the piece an almost restless energy, while the layered textures and spontaneous gestures bring depth and movement to the composition. Rather than offering a fixed narrative, the artwork invites viewers to pause and interpret the imagery through their own emotions and experiences. The expressive eye and distorted forms add a haunting yet poetic quality, making the piece both visually compelling and emotionally resonant.

Its monochrome palette enhances the rawness of the artwork, allowing every stroke and texture to stand out with striking clarity. Ideal for collectors and admirers of modern Indian expressionism, this work makes a bold statement in contemporary interiors, art collections, or gallery spaces.

A deeply personal and thought-provoking composition that celebrates freedom of expression and the emotional power of line and form.

Sunil Das is undoubtedly a multi-dimensional artist known for his furiously experimental and enterprising style. Born in 1939 in Calcutta, India, he studied at the Govt College of Art & Craft in Calcutta. On a scholarship from the French Government, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The artist has painted across several oeuvres, each one distinctive and to which he brought his singular version. Not confining himself to using brush & pen while painting (even using the palms of his hands or his fingers) his paintings not only express the physical attributes of his subjects but also their associative ones. It was in the course of his travels that he chanced to spend a few months in Spain, where he developed his passion for horses and bulls.

The artist has won many medals and awards, including from the state government and the Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also been a part of juries and art bodies in India, France & Brazil. In 2014, he was conferred with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.

The artist passed away in 2015.
