Description

Sunil Das | Untitled | Ink on Paper | 14 x 11 inches | 1980

This striking ink-on-paper artwork captures raw emotion through movement, texture, and instinctive mark-making. Created with bold, expressive strokes, the composition feels alive — almost as if the figure is emerging and dissolving at the same time. The dark layered forms, energetic lines, and spontaneous gestures create a powerful sense of tension, intensity, and human vulnerability.

The artwork carries the spirit of modern expressionism, where emotion takes precedence over realism. The fragmented figure appears caught in motion or deep contemplation, inviting viewers to interpret the narrative through their own emotions and imagination. Every line feels immediate and unfiltered, revealing the artist’s confidence and spontaneity.

Its monochromatic palette enhances the dramatic atmosphere, allowing the richness of ink textures and fluid brushwork to become the true focus. Whether displayed in a contemporary living space, gallery wall, study, or creative studio, this artwork adds depth, character, and a strong artistic presence to the environment.

A compelling piece for collectors who appreciate expressive figurative art, gestural abstraction, and emotionally driven compositions.

Sunil Das is undoubtedly a multi-dimensional artist known for his furiously experimental and enterprising style. Born in 1939 in Calcutta, India, he studied at the Govt College of Art & Craft in Calcutta. On a scholarship from the French Government, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The artist has painted across several oeuvres, each one distinctive and to which he brought his singular version. Not confining himself to using brush & pen while painting (even using the palms of his hands or his fingers) his paintings not only express the physical attributes of his subjects but also their associative ones. It was in the course of his travels that he chanced to spend a few months in Spain, where he developed his passion for horses and bulls.

The artist has won many medals and awards, including from the state government and the Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also been a part of juries and art bodies in India, France & Brazil. In 2014, he was conferred with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.

The artist passed away in 2015.
