Description

Sunil Das | Untitled | Ink on Paper | 22 x 13.5 inches | 1983

This striking pen and ink work by Sunil Das from 1983 carries the restless intensity that defines the artist’s visual language. Executed with rapid, instinctive strokes, the composition feels alive with movement and emotion. At the centre, abstracted mechanical and human-like forms seem to emerge and dissolve simultaneously, creating a powerful tension between structure and chaos.

The artwork reflects Sunil Das’s fascination with raw energy and psychological depth. The fluid lines, layered scribbles, and sudden bursts of dark ink create a sense of urgency, as though the artist captured a fleeting moment of thought directly onto paper. Despite its abstraction, the piece evokes a deeply human presence — vulnerable, fragmented, and searching.

Its monochromatic palette enhances the dramatic mood, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on gesture, rhythm, and emotion. The vertical composition gives the work an almost totemic presence, while the expressive mark-making reveals the spontaneity and confidence of the artist’s hand. This drawing stands as an intimate example of Sunil Das’s experimental approach, where emotion becomes form and line becomes movement.

Sunil Das is undoubtedly a multi-dimensional artist known for his furiously experimental and enterprising style. Born in 1939 in Calcutta, India, he studied at the Govt College of Art & Craft in Calcutta. On a scholarship from the French Government, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The artist has painted across several oeuvres, each one distinctive and to which he brought his singular version. Not confining himself to using brush & pen while painting (even using the palms of his hands or his fingers) his paintings not only express the physical attributes of his subjects but also their associative ones. It was in the course of his travels that he chanced to spend a few months in Spain, where he developed his passion for horses and bulls.

The artist has won many medals and awards, including from the state government and the Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also been a part of juries and art bodies in India, France & Brazil. In 2014, he was conferred with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.

The artist passed away in 2015.
