A serene series of nine botanical compositions by Rahim Mirza, bringing together delicate leaves, stems and organic forms against softly textured backgrounds. Muted earth tones, greens, greys and subtle accents of colour create a calm, contemplative mood. The simplicity of the forms and generous use of space give the collection a refined contemporary character, while the layered textures add warmth and a handmade quality.

Description

Rahim Mirza | Untitled | Acrylic on Canvas | 12 x 12 inches (Set of 9 works)

This beautiful series of works by Rahim Mirza explores the quiet beauty of nature through a delicate interplay of leaves, stems, earthy textures, and soft blocks of colour. Presented as a collection of nine framed compositions, each work has its own character while remaining connected to the others through a restrained, natural palette.

The artist uses muted greens, ochres, greys, browns, blush pinks, and occasional touches of red to create an atmosphere that feels calm and reflective. Simple botanical forms—particularly leaves and slender stems—become the central elements, but they are treated in an almost abstract manner. Some appear clearly defined, while others seem to dissolve into the textured backgrounds.

What makes the series particularly appealing is its sense of simplicity. The compositions do not feel crowded; instead, the generous spaces around the forms allow the viewer to pause and take in each small detail. The layered surfaces and slightly weathered textures give the works a handmade, tactile quality, while the repeated leaf motif creates a gentle visual rhythm across the collection.

Together, the nine works feel like variations on a single thought—an exploration of nature, memory and fleeting moments. Their understated character makes them equally suited to a contemporary art collection or a quiet, thoughtfully curated interior.

Born in 1969, Rahim Mirza completed his art education at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, where he studied printmaking. Mirza’s current body of work however, is largely made up of acrylics on canvas.

The leaf occupies a central motif in much of his work, representing, perhaps, a multiplicity of emotions; while the appearance of the first leaf signifies Spring and renewal, the shedding of the brown leaves in Autumn heralds the onset of winter. It is these subtleties and the complexity of the simple motif that intrigue the artist.

While Mirza focuses on the leaf, he chooses to remove it from its natural environment. Thus while the leaf is a prominent symbol in his work, there generally is no sign of a tree or any context beyond its form. In its multiplicity, the artist creates rhythm and meaning that is far beyond its reach.

Mirza had his first solo exhibition at Crimson Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2000. This was followed by others at Archer Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, in 2001; and Diara art Gallery in 2002. His work has also been a part of group shows like ‘Collective Spaces’ at M.E.C. Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2006; ‘Anadi’ at the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2000; and ‘Vibgyor’ at the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, also in 2000. Mirza has also participated in ‘Samvet’, the Madhya Pradesh exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 1999; the Tokyo International Print Triennial in 1998; the 8th All India Art Exhibition, Lucknow, in 1997; and Exposition-96 at the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 1996.
