Description

Shahabuddin Ahmed | Untitled | Oil on Canvas | 13.5 x 8.5 inches | 2024

In this evocative oil-on-canvas work, Shahabuddin Ahmed distills the human figure into a force of movement and emotion rather than a defined form. A solitary figure rises from a densely worked surface, its arm lifted upward in a gesture that suggests aspiration, invocation, or quiet defiance. The body is rendered through thick impasto and fractured color—deep blues and whites anchoring the figure, while surrounding hues of pink, ochre, grey, and muted reds dissolve into an abstract, atmospheric field. The background feels turbulent yet poetic, built from layered brushwork that records the artist’s physical engagement with the canvas. Rather than situating the figure in a specific place or narrative, Ahmed allows it to exist in an indeterminate emotional space, where gesture becomes language. The painting conveys a sense of struggle and transcendence simultaneously, reflecting the artist’s interest in the human condition as something fragile, expressive, and perpetually in motion.

Born in 1950 Shahabuddin Ahmed studied at the Academy of Fine arts, he later moved to Paris. He has shown his works extensively across the globe. In 1992 he is one of 50 Master Painters of Contemporary Arts, an award bestowed on him at the Olympiad of the Arts Barcelona.

The primary concern of his paintings is to reflect the contemporary life and times. He is an optimist and this is clearly expressed in his paintings. This optimism was firmly embedded in Shahabuddin when he has a youth was involved in the Liberation struggle for Bangladesh and had to face the various facets of life.

He has the capability to overcome the constraints of time and space. In their dynamism his paintings depict fearless human figures that cut through the difficulties of life, which provide one the reason to live. The vibrancy and force of his brushwork highlight this aspect. Above all his compositions are unmistakably musical and rhythmic. Shahabuddin`s figures seem to be enthralled in the cosmic dance at times merging with the ethereal forces.

His works are displayed in many galleries across the globe including the Museum Olympic Laussane, Switzerland and Bourn-En Brasse Museum France.
