Description

Subrata Gangopadhyay | Untitled | Pastel on Paper | 15 x 11 inches | 2000

This delicate pastel on paper work by Subrata Gangopadhyay, dated 2000, captures a moment of quiet intimacy and grace. The figure, seen in partial profile, appears to be either adorning or removing a drape — an act rendered with soft, expressive strokes and a limited yet emotive palette of reds and pinks. The textured background enhances the tactile quality, while the artist’s masterful use of light and line emphasizes form and emotion. The anonymity of the subject adds a timeless allure, evoking themes of femininity, privacy, and beauty in motion.

Subrata Gangopadhyay was born in 1959 in Calcutta, India. He Graduated from Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Calcutta in 1980 with First-class-first Diploma in Paintings (Life-Nature and Murals). Subrata has the skills of a virtuoso draftsman, skills that he honed during his years as the Senior Artist of the Ananda Bazar Group of publications. The strength of his lines and the life-like quality of his figures are features that have contributed to his enormous popularity and critical success. Widely considered as one of India ’s leading painters in the modern realistic tradition, Subrata’s artistic vision is informed by swirling colors, a sense of movement (external and internal), and a vivid array of colors. These characteristics are abundant in a series that he has done on Indian dances entitled “Rhythmic Harmony Series”. In these oil and acrylic canvases, the dancers come alive in all of their colorful glory, the swirl of their ghagras leading the rhythm of their feet. K.L. Kaul, art critic writing in The Statesman said: “The gaiety and abundance of a dance movement where the figure itself becomes the rhythm…the natural ease and poise of a belle absorbed in her world exuding an infectious smile, these images stay implanted in the mind. “Each canvass is an excellent blend of technique & feeling as it evokes a nostalgic mood, each element expresses and emotional involvement – such is the charm & magic of his canvasses just as overwhelming is the variety of his work done. Undoubtedly a Master painter he is also a distinguished portrait artist, who paints in a mixed style within the broad expressionist format, standing firmly on the solid technical foundation derived from his training in academic realism. Brushwork ranges from smoothly realistic to the patchy impastos of vibrant expressionist bristles. Subrata has worked professionally as Ex-Assistant Art Director of Ananda Bazar Group of publication, the leading Bengali news papers. Now he is working as independent full time artist. Subrata Gangopadhyay’s work is in the collections of RPG Enterprises, the Taj Group, the Chennai Museum, Mayo College, and the Victoria Memorial, to name a few.
