Description

Chandra Bhattacharjee | Untitled | Oil on Canvas | 30 x 36 inches | 1996

This evocative oil on canvas by Chandra Bhattacharjee carries a quiet emotional depth that lingers long after the first glance. The painting captures a solitary child standing near a softly illuminated window, wrapped in an atmosphere of silence, vulnerability, and introspection. There is a stillness in the composition that feels deeply human — almost like witnessing a private moment of thought, memory, or prayer.

The muted earthy tones and textured brushwork create a dreamlike mood, while the rich crimson window panels introduce warmth and emotional tension into the otherwise subdued palette. The child’s folded hands and contemplative expression suggest innocence touched by uncertainty, making the artwork both tender and haunting. Rather than narrating a fixed story, the painting leaves space for personal interpretation, allowing viewers to connect with their own emotions and memories.

Bhattacharjee’s mastery lies in his ability to blend realism with atmosphere. The soft diffusion of light, the delicate detailing of the figure, and the textured surface of the canvas together create a sense of timelessness. The artwork feels intimate yet universal — speaking quietly about solitude, childhood, hope, and the inner world we often leave unspoken.

A powerful and emotionally resonant piece, this painting is ideal for collectors who appreciate contemplative art that communicates through mood, silence, and subtle storytelling.

Born on November 18, 1961 at Patuli, West Bengal, Chandra Bhattacharjee graduated from the Indian College, of Art and Draughtsmanship with a first class in 1986. Bhattacharjee was the recipient of a gold medal from Rabindra Bharati University in 1986 for excellence in fine arts. He started his career as a billboard artist and moved on to work as graphic designed with Economic Times before becoming a professional artist.

Chandra Bhattacharjee’s canvases are languid and far removed from the urban world. Dusky men and women exist in an ethereal realm untouched by the madness of everyday city life, carrying out their daily chores. Bhattacharjee’s compositions are influenced by the rural and tribal associations that he had an opportunity to work with; particularly the ‘Santhal’ tribe of Calcutta. The textural quality of his paintings is strongly reminiscent of the traditional mud walls of these villages, smeared with cow-dung.

Chandra uses the technique of crosshatching (a method used more often in pencil drawings), in black, over the colour; this adds depth to his colours. Bhattacharjee’s paintings tell a story, but it is a story without a beginning or an end and it flows seamlessly from the artist onto the surface of the canvas. The world of Bhattacharjee’s creation is without boundaries; where humans, animals and surreal creatures coexist in harmony.
