Description

Yugal Kishore Sharma | The Haveli-2 | Mixed media on Paper | 15 x 15 inches | 2024 (Unframed & Delivered)

This painting beautifully merges traditional architectural aesthetics with contemporary abstraction, creating a dialogue between heritage and modern expression. The composition centers around a rich red square, containing a textured, dome-like pattern that evokes the rhythmic tiles or motifs often seen in classical Indian architecture. Surrounding this focal form, the artist delicately illustrates an intricate haveli — complete with arches, courtyards, domes, and stairways — rendered in fine, minimal lines and soft earthy tones. The inclusion of elephants, cows, and ornamental motifs brings life to the architectural setting, symbolizing culture, ritual, and daily rhythm. The juxtaposition of the precise architectural drawings with the bold, meditative central form suggests a balance between structure and spirituality, material and metaphysical. Through this refined interplay of space, geometry, and symbolism, the artist evokes a timeless sense of nostalgia, inviting the viewer to contemplate India’s layered history and the poetic beauty of its living architecture.
