Sanatan Dinda’s Dream Boat (2006) is a poetic mixed-media work centred on childhood imagination and the idea of dreams taking flight. A young figure sits holding a paper boat while others drift through the composition, creating a sense of movement and memory. The muted palette, weathered textures, cracks, and soft contrasts give the work a nostalgic atmosphere, while the simple paper boats become gentle symbols of hope, escape, and the limitless world of a child’s imagination.

Description

Sanatan Dinda | Dream Boat | Mixed Media on Canvas | 59.5 x 71 inches | 2006

Sanatan Dinda – Dream Boat (2006) is an evocative mixed-media work that explores childhood, imagination, and the quiet space between dreams and reality. The composition brings together a young figure seated at the bottom of the image with paper boats drifting through the surrounding space, creating a beautiful sense of distance and wonder.

The seated child holds a paper boat in his hands, while several other boats appear to float around him and across the surface. Above, a reclining human figure stretches across the upper part of the composition, creating an intriguing contrast between the grounded child and the almost dreamlike figure suspended above. The relationship between these elements gives the work a feeling of memory, longing, and imagination.

The subdued grey and earthy tones create a calm, slightly melancholic atmosphere. Against this muted background, the white paper boats become especially noticeable. Their simplicity carries much of the emotional character of the painting—they feel like small vessels carrying thoughts, hopes, or childhood dreams.

Dinda’s treatment of the surface adds another layer to the work. Cracks, stains, dripping marks, and rough textures make the canvas feel weathered and lived-in, almost like a wall carrying traces of memories. The vertical lines and fractured surface contrast beautifully with the delicate paper boats, creating a balance between fragility and permanence.

The work feels personal without being overly literal. It invites the viewer to remember the simple act of making a paper boat and allowing it to carry one’s imagination somewhere beyond the immediate world. The title Dream Boat captures this feeling beautifully, turning an ordinary childhood object into a symbol of escape, possibility, and quiet wonder.

Sanatan Dinda (born February 5, 1971) is a distinguished Indian visual artist from Kolkata, known for his remarkable contributions to both painting and sculpture. He holds the rare honour of being the first Indian artist to have a commissioned portrait of Mother Teresa displayed at Buckingham Palace.

Growing up in the vibrant yet harsh surroundings of Kumartuli—a historic neighbourhood in North Kolkata renowned for its traditional idol-making—Sanatan drew early inspiration from the everyday contrasts of beauty and decay. The narrow lanes, sacred riversides, and the artistry embedded in the local craft shaped his aesthetic vision.Despite growing up in poverty, Sanatan firmly believed that art could surpass limitations and reflect a sense of timelessness.

He completed his graduation in Western Painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, in 1992. Since then, his work has become a vital expression of contemporary Bengali visual culture, where tradition and modernity are engaged in a powerful dialogue. Through both his sculptures and paintings, he explores the human form with lyrical grace, often celebrating the sensuality and rawness of the body.

In recent years, Dinda has been especially focused on recontextualizing traditional clay-sculpting, particularly the popular local representations of Mother-goddesses, as a valid and vibrant form of modern installation art.

Sanatan continues to play a key role in Durga Puja celebrations in his locality, creating iconic installations that have earned him numerous accolades. His artwork is held in prestigious private collections, including those of Sachin Tendulkar, Amjad Ali Khan, RPG Enterprises, Reliance Industries, and Ballarpur Industries Limited. Admirers of his work span across fields—from Sanjiv and Harsh Goenka, Tina and Anil Ambani, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, to Jyoti Vikram Thapar and Amitabh Bachchan.

His exhibitions have been highly praised both in India and internationally. One of his prominent solo exhibitions, held at Hyatt Regency, Kolkata in January 2010, was inaugurated by Amjad Ali Khan.

In 2022, Sanatan Dinda further cemented his global reputation by winning the World Bodypainting Festival, a testament to his versatility and evolving creative expression.
