Description

Tapas Ghoshal | Untitled | Acrylic on Canvas | 42 x 54 inches | 2025

Untitled (2025) by Tapas Ghoshal is a captivating acrylic-on-canvas artwork that balances abstraction with a subtle suggestion of place and memory. Built through an intricate arrangement of angular shapes, translucent layers, and bold colour contrasts, the painting evokes the feeling of an imagined cityscape, where fragments of architecture, pathways, and spaces emerge and dissolve within the composition.

Dominated by calming blues and softened neutrals, the canvas is energized by flashes of warm yellows, reds, and earthy tones that create depth and visual tension. Ghoshal’s expressive brushwork and layered textures lend the work a sense of history and movement, as though the painting is capturing multiple moments and perspectives at once.

The composition encourages prolonged viewing, revealing new relationships between forms and colours with each glance. Its balance of structure and spontaneity makes it equally appealing to seasoned collectors and contemporary art enthusiasts. Whether displayed in a modern living space, office, gallery, or cultural setting, this artwork brings sophistication, curiosity, and a strong visual presence to its surroundings.

Tapas Ghosal in the present series of his paintings creates meditative structural spaces, melancholic in nature. He has a contemplative mind, which enters into the inner realm of reality, dissects it and extracts a kind of mystic silence impregnated with mysterious melody containing the quintessence of remote past. The silence is transmuted into conglomeration of various structural forms. These fragmented structures are then composed to form a unified whole reverberating the mystic past of a present city; or rather ensuing a contradiction between the past and the present. Mostly that city is Benaras. To him the architecture of Banaras is not only a point of departure, it is a continuous source of spiritual contemplation.
